It’s often difficult to convey the energy, hard work, and dedication that our Fairgrounds St. Pete team put into creating the work you get to now enjoy!
Here is a look at the wall in the Mermaid Star Motel Lobby, a painting by artist Jane Bunker, and wallpapering by our internal art and tech team.
On view in the Mermaid Star Motel Lobby, “Carnival” is a vibrant celebration of light, rhythm and color inspired by the beauty of lilies. It expresses the joy its artist, Jane Bunker, experiences from the perfection in nature, along with the tremendous happiness she feels, knowing that her art is making a difference in someone’s life.
Three years ago, she suggested to Terri Lipsey Scott, the director of the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum, that they start a college scholarship fund for African American youth, supported by 100% of the proceeds from the sales of her paintings. For Jane, this project is like a dream come true; she gets to combine her passion for painting with her love of helping people. In each of the last two years the scholarship program has raised over $40,000 and they have been blessed with an additional donation of $50,000 per year for the next ten years from the Milkey Family Foundation.
In an interview with the Gabber, Jane said “ It’s the highlight of my life, working with these young people.”
